When Samsung launched their new line of music phones, the Beat Edition, they knew they needed to get it in front of their target market - teenage music fans in the UK. So they partnered with Bebo, one of the world's most popular social networking sites, to create a Web video based music show. The show (Beat) features music news, videos and interviews while integrating the phone throughout the series via competitions, content strands and even a Beat Edition custom video player skin.
And, it seems to have worked. Since their launch in mid-June, over 3.2 million people have watched the Web videos; UK Marketing Director Mikah Martin-Cruz is happy with the results. He says using online video on a social networking site has allowed the brand to communicate the core values of the phone to the right audience.
As tempting as it may be to write off Samsung's success as a teen market specific case study, it's just not true. A recent study by Shop.com actually shows the older the consumer, the more likely he or she is to turn to online video for additional product information. The same study found that 46% of all adults occasionally use Web video for their shopping purpose while 12% use it regularly. Additionally, a full half of those surveyed found "online videos produced by manufacturers...helpful in explaining product features and how the product works" and said they've "watched online videos for products (they) have purchased online."
Bottom line: Internet video is a powerful tool in your marketing arsenal, regardless of your target demographic.
